Feature Article: Chiropractic and Children, by Dr. Norman Spector
I WAS A CHIROPRACTIC CHILD, as was my sister. The main reason we were chiropractic children was because our father was a chiropractor. We didn't know any better. As a matter of fact, we didn't know anything else. Whatever ails you, you simply waited for Dad to come home from the office. You got an adjustment and all was well. Our playmates would come over to our house and occasionally ask for an aspirin. They may have had a headache. I asked my Mom where I could find an aspirin for my friend, and she informed me that we didn't have any. My friend was incredulous, "You don't have any aspirin?" He acted as if we were aliens. This was my first encounter with the fact that most people take an aspirin for a headache and not a cervical adjustment. Wow! I simply couldn't wrap my head around the concept. In other words, you swallow this tiny white disk with a glass of water. It dissolves in your stomach and somehow goes to your head. Voila, no more headache. But how does such a thing work? To my young mind chiropractic made perfect sense: a bone's out of place at the base of your skull which is pinching on a nerve that goes up into your head. Dad come home from work, adjusts the bone, it goes back into place and the headache goes away. I mean, isn't that what was causing the headache in the first place? Of course, you can take an aspirin if you want. And maybe the aspirin makes the headache feel better or makes it go away. But what about that bone out of place pinching a nerve that goes up into your head? It doesn't just go away. It's still there.
Later, I became a chiropractor just like my Dad. And I had a son and a daughter, and my kids became chiropractic children. "No dear, we don't have any aspirin here," my wife would inform their little friends. Life goes on and my little girl grew up and graduated from college. Like many, she received a degree but had no idea what to do with it. So, she ended up in Japan teaching English. The company that hire her employed people from English speaking countries from around the world, over a 100. After she was there for awhile, a questioner was sent out asking their employees what they miss most about being away from home? Her answer: she missed Dad's chiropractic adjustments the most. Of course, she was told that hers was the most unusual answer. So kids have a lot of different health care needs, such as antibiotics for their strep throats. But their little spines shouldn't be neglected. I do not believe that either of my children ever missed a day of school. True! And I have been fortunate to be part of the health care of many children. What conditions do children respond well to chiropractic care? The simple answer is the same conditions as everyone else, from low back and neck pain to headaches. The difference is that children respond to chiropractic treatment much quicker than adults. When an adjustment corrects their spinal misalignments and eliminates nerve interference, the response is often surprisingly quick and very positive. Scoliosis is the most common condition that chiropractors treat children. Freeing the spine of misalignments (called a subluxations), helps the spine grow straight. These misalignments are clusters of fixations that immobilize parts of the spine. Adjustments and corrective exercises can have amazing results. I've also treated children for ADD, asthma, traumatic injury and different kinds of sports injuries.
Finally, I can not emphasize enough the importance of having your child's feet checked out. There are so many conditions that can be avoided in later life by fitting children with the proper inserts (orthotic inserts). It can literally mean the difference between dealing with a lifetime of pain or not. It is not uncommon to find that the arches of one foot do not support the body's weight as well as the other foot. This means when the child's body weight compresses their feet into deformity while standing or walking, one foot is flatter and wider than the other causing an imbalance. This imbalance results in stressing the spine along with the ankles and the knees. This is particularly true for young athletes. It's easy to find out if your child's feet are supporting them properly with a computerized foot scan.
Please feel free to bring your child into the office for a complimentary foot scan and a scoliosis evaluation.
